How Long Does Rehab Last After Surgery? Rehab After Surgery
July 2, 2023
If you suffer an injury or are recovering from surgery for an injury, then you may need physical therapy. Yet, choosing physical therapy clinics can be difficult, especially when you’ve never had PT before.
Finding the proper PT clinic to treat your particular needs is an important step to take in your recovery. But, as someone with an injury, your focus is likely on the physical and emotional tool your injury has taken on your life. So, you’re probably not thinking about which treatment is best for you.
You can take the stress out of looking for a PT clinic by reading this guide. Keep reading to learn everything important to consider when weighing your PT clinic options.
How Well Trained Is the Staff at the Clinic?
The first step you want to take when looking for a PT clinic is to check the qualifications of the staff.
Most importantly, it’s in your best interest to check that the PT clinic is certified by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
Once you confirm that the clinic is APTA-certified, you want to ask some further questions. For example, you want to ask if the staff is board-certified or if they have advanced degrees. Also, if the clinic has a nursing staff, then you’d want to ask if the nursing staff are registered nurses certified.
You want to ask these questions because the point of seeking PT is to make a recovery as quickly as possible to keep further conditions from developing. This could be all for naught if the PT clinic where you treat doesn’t have the qualifications to help patients.
Find a Clinic That Specializes in Your Injury
People of all ages can benefit from physical therapy, as it can be an effective treatment for injuries of all types. There are six separate areas of practice of physical therapy; pediatric, geriatric, orthopedic, cardiovascular and pulmonary, vestibular, and neurological. Which area of physical therapy you receive treatment in will depend on the circumstances of your injury.
Likewise, depending on the severity of your condition, you may want to seek out a physical therapist that specializes in your specific injury. The more experience your physical therapist has with treating your type of injury, then the more likely you’re going to see positive results.
Will You Be Seen in a Group or One on One?
At most PT clinics, you’ll have the option to either take part in group therapy or to get it in individual sessions. Although it may be less expensive to get group physical therapy, by having one-on-one sessions, your physical therapist will be more able to give you specialized attention.
But, by participating in group therapy, you’ll be in touch with people who can relate to what you’re going through because they’re experiencing themselves. This aspect of group therapy may be more appealing to some people.
How Far Away Is the PT Clinic?
If your injury keeps you from being able to drive, then it may not be in your best interest to choose a PT clinic that’s far away from your home.
In case you find a PT clinic that you like that’s far away, then you should check if the clinic offers transportation. Or, you may want to ask a family member or a loved one can drive you to your appointments.
Can You Bring Along Family?
By having a family member join you when you go to PT, you can involve them in your recovery and help them learn how they can provide care.
So when looking at your PT clinic options, ask if the clinic allows for family members to sit in during PT appointments.
See if the Clinic Takes Your Insurance
If you need help paying for physical therapy, then finding a PT clinic that takes your insurance may be helpful. In fact, it’s possible that your insurance will cover the entire cost or even a part of the cost of your PT treatment.
Look at The Hours of Operation
Is the PT clinic open 24/7 or do they only operate from 9-5? If you expect that you may have an emergency or an unexpected flare-up, then you may rather choose a PT clinic that’s open 24/7.
Or, if you have a busy schedule and are only able to schedule your PT appointments at odd hours of the day, then it may be helpful for you to treat at a clinic that’s open at early and late hours of the day.
Compare Physical Therapy Costs
Although a PT clinic may seem appealing to you, its services may not be within your budget. By comparing PT costs, you can make sure that you’re choosing the best services without breaking the bank.
Read Online Reviews
The last step you want to take in finding a PT clinic is reading online reviews. Patient reviews and testimonials give you the best and most honest idea of the quality of any given PT clinic. This is because they are unbiased and are based on first-hand experience.

I found it helpful when you said to choose a therapist that specializes in your type of injury. My brother was at my house yesterday afternoon for lunch, and he talked about how he wants to look into seeing a physical therapist sometime this month to help him figure out why he keeps pulling his shoulder out. I’ll pass these tips along to him so he can know how to find a good physical therapist.
I won’t lie, it wasn’t always easy, but having the physical therapy team by my side made all the difference. They cheered me on, even on the tough days, and helped me believe in my own abilities. Their positivity was contagious and kept me going when I felt like giving up.
